Voice in my Head (2003)

Everyone
(Leo Sayer)
Unless you’ve been asleep or dead
Lying safely in your bed
You can’t have missed
The global sense of fear
We have the right to disagree
Still we abuse this liberty
We gamble ‘til the end is getting near
Well me I wanna dissapear ‘cos
I love everyone – I love you all
I just wish that there was peace on earth
One God to save us all
We harvest every inch of space
Accelerate the human race
Create so much
And yet we say we’re bored
We beg and steal, re-populate
With urban dreams that nurture hate
And celebrate each juicy little war
If more is less – then less if less is more
I love everyone – I love you all
I just wish that there was peace on earth
One God to serve us all
A heart will simply break
When it has to steal
When it has to beg
For every single meal
(solo)
And now I stand and view my life
I’ve done some things, that were not right
I’ve caused more hurt, than I can ever heal
For me it’s simple, here’s the deal…
I love everyone – I love you all
I just wish that there was peace on earth
One God to save us all
We’ll never have to fall
Never have to fall
One God to save us all….
Pop Life
(Leo Sayer)
I used to play the clown
Making headlines in this town
I was living – the pop life
Everybody stared
At the make up that I weared
I was living – the pop life
Everything I did was new
And I didn’t really have a clue
I made some people rich
Got treated like a bitch – pop life
It was 1981
When I finally had some fun
Really livin’ – the pop life
Travelling round the world
With a dozen crazy girls
We were living – the pop life
They taught me a trick or two
Like how to never never get the blues
It’s easy when you know
How to let your spirit go – pop life
It’s alright – all night – pop life
You get it right – it’s outa site – pop life
Now I’m getting old
I’m just doing what I’m told
I ‘ain’t livin’ – the pop life
I made a little bread
Got a forty acre spread
Thanks to living the pop life
It’s alright – my life – the pop life
It’s outa site -all night – the pop life
Yeah the high light – of my life – was the pop life
Saturday Girl
(Leo Sayer)
She takes the bus ride down Kinsella Street
Past The Queens Head and The Barrel Of Wheat
Rides the top deck ‘til she’ll reach the parade
And the penny arcade
Puts on an apron at the foot of the stairs
And a band of gold that ties back her hair
She bought a magazine about the stars on TV
She’s gonna read with her tea
And she might share some spare conversation
About the weather and the world far outside
As she lays out the place mats
And brushes the doormat
And swings the sign around to open the cafe
And Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays’ a drag
Thursdays and Friday’s so sad, so sad
But come Saturday girl, I’m on top of the world
The moment she steps through that door
She’s got a smile like a rainbow in the grey
And a laugh that’d make a misery’s day
And all the customers they think she’s a hoot
Yeah and the boys think she’s cute
And when we close up
She sings along to the jukebox
“I just need somebody, I need someone to love”
And then she climbs on the table top
Swinging her dishmop
And I wish I had the courage and I could say
Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays’ a drag
Thursdays and Friday’s so sad, so sad
She’s my Saturday girl, I’m on top of the world
Yeah it’s the one day I feel like a king
It’s Saturday, it’s Saturday
Saturday, it’s Saturday, it’s Saturday
The moment she steps through that door…..
You Thrill Me
(Leo Sayer/Albert Hammond)
You were born to be free
You were born to be wild
You were born from the wind
Like a motherless child
When you fell from a star
You fell just in time
You fell just for me
I knew you’d be mine
You thrill me
You make me feel life is worth living for
You thrill me the most
Nobody – nobody – nobody
Loves me like you
There’s a place in my heart
There’s a place just for you
There’s a place where I go
Where my dreams all come true
And I don’t need the dark
And I don’t need the light
And I don’t need nobody else
With you I’m alive
You thrill me
You make me feel life is worth living for
You thrill me the most
Nobody – nobody – nobody
Loves me like you
Loves me like you
Loves me like you
I never had a lonely day
Since I held you in my arms
I’ll never ever let you go away
With you I’m in heaven
‘cos You thrill me
You make me feel life is worth living for
You thrill me the most
Nobody – nobody – nobody
Loves me like you
Loves me like you
Loves me like you
Loves me like you
We Got Away With It
(Leo Sayer)
It was the opening night of a Rock ‘n Roll travelling show
And they all were there, I mean the faces everybody knows
As the long limbed beauty left the long black limousine
The floor was wet as if the devil had prepared the scene
A high heel cracks and over she goes
We got away with it, they’ll never catch us anyway
We had the best of it, kids today well they just don’t know…
Hey you remember him, he was the face of ‘78
He drove a pink sports car straight through his manager’s gate
Yeah the alarms went off, but just a little bit too late
As his tyres dug deeper through the lawns of the great estate
He drove into the pool and he couldn’t escape, no
He got away with it, frogmen and cranes raised his legend high
They made a song of it, feed the fish to close – you die
You gotta go for it, someone will always tell you no
Fly in the face of it, showbiz folks always put on a show…
Living the high life – big time
Living outside the law
Living the bright light – high time – that’s what living’s for…
He was a rock god adonis in the big hotel
Where they partied all night, every night a different girl
Yeah the drugs came in, the money went out, nobody really cared
When the candle fell over and the flames lit his bleach blond hair
The dude slept through it as the fireball flared. yeah
We got away with it, sometimes I stop just to reminisce
Right in the thick of it, lips pursed waiting for stardom’s kiss
We love the smell of it, the fame and fortune is our goal
Selfish and spoilt by it, days lived hard slowly taking their toll
We got away with it, I got some stories I can’t tell
But hey there’s a book in it, human suffering always sells
Always sells…
I Never Knew
(Leo Sayer/Albert Hammond)
I never knew nobody
Who loved me better than the way you do
I never knew no-one like you
I never knew this feeling
I never trusted no-one in my life
But I know with you it’s right
‘Cos baby you’re there
When I need you
Baby you’re there
If I’m blue
And I know that I’m blessed
I can only confess
That there’s so much that I never knew
I never knew how happy
I could be with you here by my side
As I look at you tonight
All day I’m just dreaming
That’s all that I do
Can’t wait for the hours
That I spend with you
I never knew nobody
Who loved me better than the way you do
But there’s so much I never knew
No there’s so much I never knew
There’s so much I never – knew…
Please Don’t Walk Away
(Leo Sayer)
I was driving home late last night
When I heard the phone
It’s my baby callin’ says I need you here
How soon can you make it home
Well I pulled into the drive
Not knowing what to expect
She said I been talking to my girlfriends
They’ve been making a lot of sense
I need a little time alone
I need to take a break
I don’t need no pressure in my life
I think I made a big mistake
I said what’s that baby…..?
Please don’t walk away
Don’t make me say
I’m just no good without you
I got a busted heart
It’s been torn apart
And it won’t work without you
Well we’ve been close for six good years
And she’s the kind of girl
Makes you forget your fears
I was lonely before I met her
Don’t wanna be lonely again
Hangin around some singles bar
Looking for a new best friend
So, please don’t walk away
Don’t make me say
I’m just no good without you
I got a busted heart
It’s been torn apart
And it won’t work without you now…
Not now, not now…
Don’t Look Back
(Leo Sayer)
Some people terrified of spiders and snakes
Ladders and space – oh what a waste
Some people never climb over the wall
Think they’re too small and hide their face
Some people live their life under glass
Stay in their past – sit on their ass
I’m here to tell you that life is a gas
Tomorrow’s a blast so don’t look back
So come on ‘n pick it up
Throw some coffee in that dirty ‘ol cup
Eyes on the prize – re-energise
There’s another party waiting to use your sky
Push your legs into a new pair of shoes
Don’t stop you’ll only get the loser’s blues
Out there somebody’s waiting on you
To reach out and throw ‘em some slack
Behind everyone lies a mistake
A terrible place – a bad break
You can’t remember every bug that you killed
Every bottle you spilled – each swallowed pill
I like to think I got no enemies
yet here comes someone with a knife in his teeth
Telling everyone he’s a looking for me
For something or other I done – oh boy
I get up and I run
Dodge every bullet from the “your guilty” gun
I paid the price – had my fun
Committed my sins – I lied to my mum
I keep my head above this watery grave
Keep my eyes on the prize – pretend I’m brave
One thing I ‘aint is nobody’s slave
I watch my front and my back (Don’t look back)
So come on ‘n pick it up
Throw some coffee in that dirty ‘ol cup
Eyes on the prize – re-energise
There’s another party waiting to use your sky
Push your legs into a new pair of shoes
Don’t stop you’ll only get the loser’s blues
Out there somebody’s waiting on you
Reach out and throw ‘em some slack (Don’t look back)
Voice in my Head
(Leo Sayer)
I‘m stronger than an ox, Iron to the core
Getting bolder every day , now I live outside the law
I don’t even get the blues, not anymore
‘Cos I’ve found the perfect place, we’re all looking for
Ah but each time I try to fly
The voice in my head
Says get back to the drawing board and start again…
And I need you, and I want you
Gotta have you, and I can’t let go, no I can’t let go
I can walk into a room and I know just where to stand
I can talk to anyone like a confidential man
I got all the clever lines, and I know all the moves
I’m a perfect suit of clothes, in the perfect pair of shoes
Ah but each time I try to fly
The voice in my head
Says get down to the bottom boy, and start again…
And I need you, and I want you
Gotta have you, ‘cos I can’t let go, no I can’t let go
I was dyin’ of thirst, and looking my worst when I came in here …mmm
Now I stand alone in the the night, wondering what is right
Why you came in here
I can’t stay in here
I don’t hang around no more, the places that we used to
I guess I’ve learned a little, and I know what I should do
I’ve become a little quieter, a little more contained
You could say I’m waiting – waiting for a change
Ah but each time I try to fly
The voice in my head
Says get back to the drawing board, and try again…
And I need you, and I want you
Gotta have you, and I can’t let go, no I can’t let go
And I feel you, ‘cos I failed you
And I lost you, but I can’t let go, no I can’t let go
And I love you, and I want you
More than ever, but I can’t let go – no I can’t let go….
Candygram
(Leo Sayer)
Candy took a walk
Deep into Manhattan
Sold her soul to the devil there
Now she can’t get it back – no she can’t get it back
She’s waiting in a phone booth
For a man to come save her
But he’s taken every dollar that she made
And she can’t get it back – no she can’t get it back
Jesus is in heaven and Mary’s in the stable
But Candy’s got nowhere to go to sleep
Her poppa’s in the graveyard and her momma’s back in Kansas
Praying to the angels of the weak
For Candy’s soul to keep
Candy was a boy
Who never played no ball games
Missed out on every ride at the fair
Now she can’t get it back – no she can’t get it back
Candy feels the breeze
And heads out on the highway
No one’s gonna miss her when she’s gone
No they won’t have her back – no they won’t get her back
Jesus is in heaven and Judas’s in jailhouse
Chasing our poor Candy round the cell
Where are all the saints and where are all the angels
Why is every day a living hell – a living hell
Now Candy wants to die but can’t afford the burial
Mama doesn’t want her and won’t pay
No she won’t take her back – no she won’t take her back
So Candy has a plan
She’ll ride out on the beltway
Take the road until she dissapears
And they won’t get her back – no they won’t get her back
She can’t get it back – no she won’t get it back
Can’t get it – don’t get it
Can’t get it – won’t get it
Almost Blue
(Leo Sayer/Albert Hammond)
Drifter
You know why I’m following you
I’ve been finding my way home too
Almost blue
Preacher
You know I’m that I’m listening to you
I’ve been doing some praying too
Almost blue
Almost blue
It took me so long just to figure it out
But I’m blind and I’m slow and I’m proud
Like a stubborn old mule I’ve been climbing a ridge
And I can’t find my way back down
Dreamer
I’m two steps behind you now
And I think I believe somehow
Almost blue
The smile on my face is glowing right now
And I know that I’m not going to fail
If there’s a place in this world where the wounded at heart
Can find peace at the end of the trail
Cowboy
We’ve seen some of the strangest things
Things that turn little boys into men
Turn you blue
Almost blue
Almost blue
….Almost blue
Running Man
(Leo Sayer)
When the sand’s too hot to walk on
When the air’s too foul to breathe
Than it’s best to keep on pushin’ on
To a place where you can be free
But who are you running to
And where are you running from
Do you realise in this great big world
That there’s nowhere that you belong
You’re just a running man
Poor little running man
You’re just a running man
A running man
So you sold you soul for silver
So you lost your heart for gold
So you believed everything that was said to you
‘Til what was hot felt warm then cold
So your best friends changed and hurt you
So your lovers were untrue
So your belief in yourself was a shallow lie
And now you’re on the move
But who are you running to
And where are you coming from
Are you all alone in this big big world
Do you know why you don’t belong
You’re just a running man
Poor little running man
You’re just a running man
A running man
Your little shoes will take you
Further along the road
Your little feet will make you
Go where you wanna go
But where are you running to
And who are you running from
When you realise in this big big world
There and Back Again
(Leo Sayer)
My oh my what do we have here
A world of trouble, a world of fear
And no-where safe you can dissapear to
No long and winding road
John-Boy dont wanna work no more
So he sits and stares at the bathroom floor
Where the tiles collide with the lonely walls
That hold his fear inside
Convinced now that all that was wrong is right
His imagination has taken flight
So he turns the key that unlocks his life
And he takes himself within
He goes there and back again, right there – he goes there
Sheila G had known many men
She decided one day she’d go and see ‘em again
She chased down nine from a likely ten
There was one that got away
Well they all lived such bright and happy lives
Said since she left everything had gone right
She thought she would find they were broken men
That only she could mend
Well from that day forward she changed her life
She was a ghostly shadow with a face so white
Said she’d never again try to tempt her fate
‘Cos sometimes you’re just too late
To go there and back again, she went there and back again
She went there – right there
Well you and me well we’ll always be
Considering our place in infinity
As we look back on scenes of eternity, and laugh
‘Cos time does such cruel and wicked things
Makes you change your conceptions and shed your skin
‘Til you dont who you are or where you’ve been
But I know one thing and I know it well
It’s a sorry soul who’s no tale to tell
When evening falls and we reminisce
Saying is that all there is?
We go there and back again, right there – we go there
It’s a case of been there, done that yeah……
It’s all experience along the way – where ya been – things ya seen.
It all comes down – number one – I’d do it all again – I’d do it all again, I been there, done that yeah…..
Becalmed
(Leo Sayer)
Becalmed on a marble sea
Trying to count the clouds hanging over me
I’m watching as the seagulls fly, high across an empty sky
Over me, over me
Adrift, another crazy scheme
But a man that ventures through an unknown ocean
Has the right to dream
I’m dreaming of another world, where the chequered flag unfurls
Just for me, just for me
I’m waiting – on a dream
I’m waiting
For my life to start
A new phase to begin
It’s just before the dawn
The time every ancient curse appears
Every fear is born
Just watching as the moonlight fades
Extinguishing the night parade
Over me, high over me
I’m waiting – on a dream
I’m waiting
For my life to start
Tomorrow to begin, to begin…
B/V’s :
If you move too fast – if you move to soon – you’re never gonna leave this waiting room
So hold on tight ‘til the final scene, and keep real close to your dream
To your dream…..
I looked out on a vast expanse of empty endless ocean
Stretching out before me
Offering no answer or salvation,
Only that I should wait, I should wait, wait for the wind
Maybe
(Leo Sayer/Susie Webb)
Maybe
Although you think that I’m crazy
There’s one thing that is true
I’ll always love you
Someday
You’ll come around
And then one day
You’ll fall in love with me too
It’s long overdue
You’re always taking time
Being careful with your words
As if you really can’t define
My place inside your world
If time
Could only stop
And let this moment be mine
You turn away when I say
We’ll be together one day
Everyday
I think of you
And I miss you
When you’re away from my side
You’re always on my mind
Oh won’t you stay with me tonight
Don’t say you should go home
We’ll make love by candle-light
Let’s make the most of this time
This time together
So maybe
It’s not so pointless and crazy
If I treat you like lovers do
My dream will come true
You’ll fall in love with me too
